IIM Shillong has been set up with a vision of expansion and mobilisation of facilities for offering good quality management education and research in the North Eastern region of India. The decision of coming up with an Indian Institute of Management in the North East was unanimously taken by the Union Minister of Human Resource Development along with the Chief Ministers of the North Eastern States in the Review Meeting held at Shillong during June 2004. Shillong was drafted as the permanent location for the institute after consultation between the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DONER) and the Chief Ministers of States of the region.
The Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management (RGIIM) offers a comprehensive two years Post-Graduate Diploma in Management Programme (PGDM). The course has been designed to provide a holistic approach towards addressing business problems of the new millennium and beyond. The institute aims to develop unbeatable leaders for an economically and ecologically sustainable society, with the help of a unique curriculum that comprises a mix of compulsory and elective courses, supplemented by specialised courses on industry sectors.
All the class rooms are aesthetically designed with high tech infrastructure and are fully equipped with modern facilities to help participants in their learning process. Each class room has an interactive white board with Internet connectivity. This relieves the participants from jotting down class notes, and instead concentrate on the discussion. The class jotting on the board can be mailed to the email accounts of the participants after the class. The classes are also provided with high speed wireless internet connectivity, so that necessary literature from different databases can be downloaded to enhance classroom discussion. Most of the class rooms are provided with wireless microphone facilities. These classrooms are also equipped with videoconferencing facilities.
The Institute has undertaken a process of developing a modern Learning Resource Centre with interdisciplinary focus on books, periodicals, national and international journals, working papers and dissertations. The Institute has augmented the initiative for an IT infrastructure to facilitate all its present and upcoming activities. There are both single and double occupancy rooms available for the students. Besides the basic amenities of a cot, mattress, room heater, wardrobe, study table and a chair, in every room, the dormitories are connected with a state of the art Wireless Mesh Network (WMN). There is also a common reading room, common recreation room equipped with table-tennis, carom, and television facilities. Within the confines of the dormitories are a gymnasium, basketball and badminton court present inside the campus.
The Institute provides medical aid to all resident students. An on-duty doctor is available in the dispensary of the campus.
Among other facilities, The State Bank of India ATM already benefits the campus activities.
The Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management, Shillong or RGIIM is a Business School recently setup by the Government of India in the state of Meghalaya. It is the seventh and youngest in the line of Indian Institutes of Management that are generally considered to be among the best business schools in India. It is named after former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi and the foundation stone of the institute was laid by Shri Arjun Singh, HRD Minister on December 1, 2007. and was formally inaugurated by Dr Donkupar Roy The Chief Minister Of Meghalaya on 4 July 2008.
The director of IIM Shillong is Prof. Ashoke K Dutta, an alumnus of IIM Calcutta. Educated in Calcutta at the St. Xavier's College and the Indian Institute of Management. Prof. Ashoke K Dutta was on the Ph.D. programme in management at the Case Western Reserve University, USA for two years. He has worked for more than 30 years in Multinational Corporations, Indian Business Houses and Public Sector Enterprises. He has experience in industry such as Shipping & Transport, Fast Moving Consumer Products, Pharmaceutical, Media and Education.
IIM Shillong follows a unique concept of winter internships. Under this, students go for internships in the months of January and February. Even under the economic downturn, every student was placed and 35 companies across sectors made a total of 79 offers to 64 students. Top recruiters included Deloittes, E&Y, KPMG, PwC, Ogilvy & Mather, Viacom, Warner Brothers, AC Nielsen, Cadbury, Citigroup, HDFC, Standard Chartered, Axis Bank, Tata AIG, SBI Cap, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Siemens, Bosch, Ford, Honda, Lafarge, Hero Group and ONGC.
Setting up IIMs and Central Universities in smaller cities and less developed Indian States has been a policy of the Indian Government for some time.
It was after a long drawn tussle with the neighbouring Assam that Meghalaya was granted the first IIM in North East India. The government of Meghalaya has allocated around 120 acres (0.49 km2) of land for the construction of a permanent campus in Shillong. A temporary campus has been set up at the Mayurbhanj complex of the North Eastern Hill University for the new IIM. A permanent campus will come in the new Shillong township later.
With a view to provide a holistic approach to solving business problems of the new millennium and beyond, the institute offers a tailored two years post graduate diploma in business management. With a unique curriculum comprising of a mix of compulsory courses and electives,supplemented by specialized courses on industry sector, the institute aims to develop thought leaders for an economically and ecologically sustainable society. The institute lays a special emphasis on Sustainability in its academics with thrust on developing sustainable business models. It is one of its kind Business school in India, where each aspect of Management is studied from environmental and social perspective.
IIM Shillong currently offers the two-year Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) and in the future will offer other courses like the Fellow Program in Management (FPM). In addition, the Institute offers Management Development Programmes (MDPs), Research and Consultancy. In addition institute runs an Accelerated Learning Center (ALC) which conduct short term certificate courses.
